About Us

Founded in 2016, Writing Central is one of the only journalism- and communication-specific writing centers in the United States. We offer free peer writing support through one-on-one coaching sessions to University of Oregon journalism and communication students.

Our coaching philosophy centers on helping the writer grow rather than improving a letter grade. We believe that writing is a powerful tool and that everyone has the potential to become a stronger writer. We also believe the writing process has benefits beyond the written word and that it helps visual/multimedia journalists and communicators as well.

Our student-coaches are trained to give feedback on assignments ranging from news stories and news releases to freelance pieces and other professional materials. We offer in-person pop-in hours four days a week, as well as one-on-one appointments with our coaches in person or over Zoom. We also offer written feedback rough our online Drop-n-Go system.
